How to Choose the Size of a Waldorf Doll

Waldorf dolls can be made in different sizes and with slightly different body structures.

In my work I create two main types of dolls: dolls made with a standard pattern and dolls made with a baby-style pattern, which have more childlike proportions.

Standard dolls have a one-piece body and straight legs, and they can be made in several sizes. Each size feels different and serves a different purpose.

Small dolls — about 9 inches (21 cm)

These are the smallest dolls I make.

They fit right into your hands and have a special charm.

These dolls are:

• easy to carry
• quick to sew
• perfect as symbolic or collectible dolls.

They can easily fit into a bag and travel with you.
They can become a small companion for both children and adults.

12 inch dolls (30 cm)

This size works beautifully for small children’s hands.

These dolls are:

• perfect for play
• easy to dress and undress
• small enough to take along on trips or walks.

For many children this size becomes their everyday play companion.

14–16 inch dolls (35–40 cm)

These dolls are large enough to be hugged and cuddled.

They are wonderful for:

• comforting hugs
• quiet play
• sleeping next to the child.

However, they are less convenient to carry everywhere.
They often become a special doll waiting for the child at home.

For very small children this size may feel a little too big to hold comfortably.

Large dolls — 18–20 inches (45–50 cm)

Dolls of this size are often made for adults.

They may be created using either the standard pattern or the baby-style pattern.

Sometimes these dolls are made as memory dolls, reminding parents of the time when their children were newborn babies.

Often real baby clothes are used for them.

I can also create these dolls with added weight, so they feel similar to holding a real newborn.

Baby dolls — about 16 inches (42 cm)

Baby-style dolls around 16.5 inches (42 cm) are often wonderful play dolls for older children.

Their proportions feel more realistic, and they can become a “baby” that the child cares for and nurtures.

Which size should you choose?

Each doll size feels very different.

It is not that one size is better than another.
Rather, there is a right size for a particular person, age, and purpose.

If you are unsure which doll size would suit you best, feel free to write to me. I will be happy to help you choose the right doll for your situation.
